March Project

Stumpwork class with Betsy!

The project for March is a beginner level Stumpwork ornament.  It features a
raspberry with sepals, leaves and bud on a curved stem.  In the center area
of the stem is a spider sitting in her web.  The complete kit includes everything
needed to complete the ornament - silk Dupioni fabric, skirtex circles, cotton
batting, pearled silk thread, overdyed silk embroidery floss, metallic thread,
beads, felt and cording material.  In class we will 'doodle' all of the stitches
and techniques used in the design.  The finished ornament is 3 inches in
diameter.  The kit fee is $20.  Please bring a 4 inch hoop as well as your
usual stitching supplies to class.

What to bring:

if your last name begins with A-E, please bring a desert
if your last name begins with F-R, please bring a salad, sandwich, main dish
if your last name begins with Q-Z, please bring a breakfast food

We've got 21 people signed up for the Mystery Sampler. If you haven't signed up and have changed your mind, we have a few extra pieces of banding. Talk Donna L., Kathy M., or Amanda P. about joining us.

January Luncheon

We'll be having a potluck this Saturday at the usual location, but on our Saturday schedule. Social Hour begins at 9:30, business meeting at 10:00 a.m. Check your newsletter for what you are supposed to bring.

Our class is the beginning of the Mystery Sampler from the Needlearts magazine - various issues in 2005 and 2006. If you signed up and paid for this class, you'll receive the linen banding and the instructions. This is being jointly taught by Donna L., Kathy M., and Amanda P.

Washington Post's holiday crafts contest: the Washington Post is having a contest.

Here's what it said in the Local Living section of Thursday's paper:

Local living wants to celebrate the spirit of the winter season with beautiful handmade crafts, such as ornaments, garlands, cards and gifts. With our Holiday Crafts Contest, we invite you, crafty person, to share an original creation with us. 

Your  homemade craft can be sewn, woven, knitted, molded with plain paper or papier-mache or created with any materials you like. It can decorate a tree, hang on a wall, sit on a table or be wearable. it should be themed for any of the winter holidays or simply be winter-appropriate.

What are we not looking for? Anything made from a kit, copied from a book or Web site, or otherwise unoriginal. Your kids' school craft, however adorable, probably won't make the cut either.

The best crater will win a prize and be featured int a Local Living article in December. Enter by submitting high-resolution photos online along with your contact information and where you live; the deadline is November 30.

No Meeting November

It's that time of year for a month without a regular meeting. 

Things that will still be happening:

Board meeting at Barbara's house:  November 10 at 7 p.m.

Stitching in Public:  at Panera's in the Reston Town Center November 17th at 6:00 p.m. - buy your dinner or just a drink and sit and stitch with some friends!
